“Soul Sucker”

by Deanna Romani

With new music emerging from a ton of artists in the Phoenix local scene, it’s no surprise that This Century released a new tune.

Monday evening, the Phoenix-based pop-rock band released the title track of their upcoming third studio record, titled Soul Sucker, with a set release date of June 2nd. Vocalist Joel Kanitz had teased on and off via his Twitter and the band’s various social media pages weeks leading up to release about new music. Kanitz had even let some fans listen to the single early before their acoustic performance at Tempe Marketplace at the beginning of the month. The band then blacked out all their social media accounts with a countdown, with the countdown ending on Monday night.

“Soul Sucker” is a bit edgier than the band’s past singles and a totally different contrast to their stand-alone single, “Talk To Talk” (which was released the end of last year). “Soul Sucker” is radio-friendly and completely guitar driven, even featuring guest vocals from Alyssia McRoyal of the indie pop duo Alyssia & Andrew. Kanitz sings a bit higher than his normal range, making the track really vibrant and edgy compared to songs out of This Century’s already established catalogue. Nonetheless, it was the perfect choice to kick off their third album with.

Soul Sucker is out June 2 on Eighty One Twenty Three.

Catch This Century live at The Rebel Lounge on Saturday, June 13 with WLFPCK and Julia Lauren. Tickets are available for purchase here.
