Frank Iero does not have time for crowd shenanigans.
The former My Chemical Romance rhythm guitarist stopped his sold out show on Monday when someone at the front of the packed floor got a little too violent with some surrounding fans.
“Get the f*ck out of my show right now,” was the final verdict, as the audience screamed their approval.
Barring that interruption, Iero, who performs under the moniker frnkiero and the cellabration, bombarded the rowdy crowd with a high energy punk rock set at Pub Rock in Scottsdale.
Iero and his band opened with “All I Want Is Nothing” and had the fans moving from the first jarring notes. “Stitches” and “Joyriding” had the fans screaming along and even the slower “She’s the Prettiest Girl in the Room and She Can Prove It With a Mean Right Hook” didn’t slow the madness of the crowd. Iero’s voice was most impressive, as he did not filter his vocals like he did on the band’s debut record, Stomachaches.
Opener Derek Zanetti of The Homeless Gospel Choir joined Iero onstage for a rousing cover of “Boxcar” by Jawbreaker as Iero flashed his signature smile while playing guitar in the background. By far the most special (and unexpected) moment of the evening came near the end of the set when the band launched into “Sunsets are for Muggings,” a song from Iero’s former metal project Leathermouth.
While the audience probably should have been filled with nostalgic twenty-somethings and crusty punk rockers, Iero’s MCR fame brought all the tween girls in their Hot Topic shirts to the show. Iero didn’t seem to mind and blasted through his set, somehow managing to be louder than the screaming girls.
Iero’s chosen openers did not disappoint either. The Jersey-bred Modern Chemistry riled up the audience with their incredibly loud brand of sad boy rock and The Homeless Gospel Choir’s acoustic protest songs continued to elevate energy levels.
This show was one for the books and the thrilled faces of departing fans made it clear that the former MCR rockers will still be able to sell out a show.
Overheard in the crowd: “Frank is in super dad mode tonight.”
