Paradise Fears: An Interview

South Dakota is a state typically not recognized for its music, but if there’s one artist you should know from that particular part of the U.S., it’s Paradise Fears.

Paradise Fears is a five-piece multi-instrumental theatrical alternative rock unit with one message, and according to the band’s front man Sam Miller, it’s a pretty simple one.

“We wanted to write songs that matter,” Miller states on the band’s official website and the band’s Facebook page. Since the late 2000s, they’ve been able to do just that.

The band gained a majority of their fans from touring with artists like All Time Low, The Summer Set and The Cab back in 2011; along with the numerous covers posted onto their YouTube channel back in 2012. In summer of 2014, they entered the Macy’s iHeart Radio Rising Star contest, where they became finalists and eventually placed in third. July of that same year, the five signed to Nashville-based record label, DigSin. Under DigSin, they’ve released two singles: “You To Believe In” and “Who We Were With.”

I had the opportunity to chat with the band’s front man before they opened for Andy Grammer and Alex & Sierra at the Marquee Theatre in Tempe on Sunday. We talked about plans the band has for this year, Drake’s latest mixtape, touring, and tattoos.

After posing for some photos, Sam and the rest of Paradise Fears finally hit the stage at the Marquee. They played around 9 songs for the pretty packed house, some old, some brand new, and they even won the people in their late twenties in the crowd over with covers of of A-ha’s “Take On Me” and Nick Jonas’s top-40 single, “Jealous.” They started and closed their set with their two latest singles, and the crowd definitely got into the groove the moment the band stepped out onstage.

According to the band’s Facebook page, they draw their inspiration from artists like Coldplay, The Script and Jack’s Mannequin. Since their last album, Battle Scars, they have a sound very similar to bands like The Cab and Parachute. Similar, but at the same time; very different from anything I’ve ever heard on an album or seen in concert before.
