If you’re always on the lookout for the latest underdog, here’s a band to keep an eye out for: TV Girl. Back in 2010, current band member Brad Petering and Trung Ngo began making music while still in college as a sort of side thing. Their mutual love for music, Ngo’s voice, and Petering’s wicked beats eventually brought to life their first EP, TV Girl, which featured four songs. The first sign of a promising future came when their song “If You Want It” received a mention on Pitchfork’s Forkcast column.

Fast forward to 2014, Ngo has left the band and Jason Wyman along with Wyatt Harmon have joined forces with Petering. This last June, TV Girl released its debut album French Exit. If you had the opportunity to listen to this album throughout the summer, you will agree that it was indeed a sweet experience. TV Girl’s wavish/cheery beats are juxtaposed with gloomy lyrics throughout the album, perfect for those long summer days. However, if you’re just now discovering TV Girl, this album is a rare jewel totally worth listening to even now. Each one of TV Girl’s songs merits one or two plays (or actually a lot more, like, countless plays): one to enjoy the beat, and two to try to understand the lyrics.

Songs like “Lovers Rock” will leave you in a kind-of-happy-kind-of-confused daze with lyrics like, “Are you sick of me? Would like to be?” The strategic layering of sounds is what makes this song—and other songs by TV Girl—a dreamy mix of perfectly quirky lyrics and sounds.

If French Exit is a sort of stepping stone for TV Girl, we can only expect more greatness to come.
