Artist to Watch: FKA Twigs

by Martine Desulme

FKA Twigs, born Tahlia Barnett, is the backup dancer turned singer-songwriter making a name for herself on the fast-growing London music scene with her mixture of angelic whispers and tranquil yet demanding beats. FKA Twigs grew up in the quiet rural area of Gloucestershire but as a teenager moved to London to pursue dancing. FKA Twigs has been a backup dancer for artists like Ed Sheeran, Taio Cruz, and even Jessie J. In the past few years, Twigs has delved into a new kind of work, that being of a recording artist while releasing two EPs and finally her debut album in 2014 titled LP1.

FKA Twigs brings a new feel of alternative R&B with her soft-spoken voice on top of smooth, airy beats making you feel as if you’re in another world. Don’t let that sweet voice fool you though, Twigs’ songs have a presence that demand her emotions to be felt despite the simplicity of the lyrics. Feature tracks on LP1, “Two Weeks” and “Pendulum,” pull the great and blissfully quirky that is FKA Twigs together.

FKA Twigs is set to make her American television debut on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on November 4 which will kick off her newly announced North American tour. Keep your eyes and ears open for her in the coming year because FKA Twigs is here to stay.
